Q&A with Evgeny

1. What tournaments did Evgeny play for gaining ATP points when he just became pro?
I began, as everyone else, with Futures, then Challengers, and only then there were ATP tournaments. I played mostly in Europe. Europe has always been known of its good tournaments.

2. How do tournaments in S-Petersburg and Moscow differ and which of them does Evgeny like most? Why? What feelings does he have when playing in Russia?
They don't differ. Moscow and S-Petersburg has the best tournaments in Europe. Organization is excellent. It is always nice to play home knowing that fans are cheering for you. You always want to play the best you can. That is why Moscow and S-Petersburg are like my second home.

3. What is your main dream? Do you have any hobby apart from the tennis?
Apart from the tennis is tennis itself:) I have a dream, but I can't tell it - or it will not come true. I have many hobbies. I love healthy life style - go cycling on mountain bike, play football, sometimes play hockey or skate. I love being active.

4. Who are your best friends on the Tour?
I do hot have friends on the Tour but I'm in a good relationship with most of the guys.

5. Where is it better to play Futures and Challengers in Europe? Which of these are easier?
In fact everywhere in Europe is good. Futures are easier but it wasn't easy for me because I always played against very strong guys. And, in overall, the level is very high both in Futures and Challengers and ATP.

6. Are you ready to pay all your attention to tennis and concentrate only on it? Are you a tennis-mad? It's hard to predict but till what age are you planning to play on Tour?
Yes, I am trying. In some way, yes. I want to play as long as I can because I just started playing!

7. What is the relationship between you and the Russian players? Who's your best friend among them? And what do you think of Marat Safin?
I have friendly relationship with all Russian players. What about Marat - he is a super player and excellent person.

8. Who has always been your tennis idol? And are there any tennis players who you admire, maybe copy?
In childhood I liked Stefan Edberg, Evgeny Kafelnikov. And to admire and copy... I have my own technique and play style.

9. Evgeny, I read somewhere you like metal music. What do you like most and are you a fan of progressive metal? If I am wrong let the question be about the music as the whole.
Yes, I like hard music but I don't distinguish it, I just listen what I like.

10. I saw the video from St. Petersburg and I have a question: why have you changed the way you serve?
Yes, I have changed my serve. I am always looking for something new, I experiment. So far I like it and there is already a good result.

11. With such sport genes you could choose any sport. Why did you choose tennis?
Maybe I could but my Mom wanted me to play tennis, and my Dad wanted me to play hockey. Well, we took Mom's part and I don't regret it.

12. What best advice have you ever received?
This was the advice of my relatives but I won't tell you what it was about :)

13. Have you ever had a moment when you thought "Maybe I should give up, stop playing tennis, have a normal life, enter the university etc."? What is your motivation as a player?
No, I've never had such moments. I have a normal life. And maybe I'll enter the Institute after I retire from tennis.

14. You haven't played junior tournaments. What do you think, did it help you as a player in terms of communication? You started travelling when all your coevals have learned each other for a long time?
I played junior tournaments but not so much. I have my own path, and everything is fine in terms of communication.

15. What obstacles/difficulties have you had when you started playing ATP tournaments? How much higher is the level of ATP tennis?
There were obstacles everywhere. I fought a lot in futures, then there were challengers, now ATP. I'm working hard. My team helps me a lot. Level of ATP is very high, all guys are very experienced, they won't let you win the point easily.

16. What goals for this season do you have? How do you measure your goals? Is it ranking, wins in the tournaments or what...?
I want to win an ATP tournament, and the more the better :) I measure my goals with wins but I also don't forget about rankings.

Now I live in the tournaments, I often visit Moscow, Germany but I wasn't planning to move to Florida any time soon...
