When Evgeny was 4 years old, his parents brought him to a tennis group in the "Luzhniki" stadium. The family decided that although they liked hockey, it was a more dangerous sport and it'd be better if Zhenya plays tennis. After Luzhniki Zhenya started playing in "Spartak" where his coach was Larisa Preobrazhenskaya. She says very nice words about Evgeny: "The boy was incredible. He was not like other children. He had a unique concentration for a child. He was never distracted, he played so selflessly! Even when he had a terrible illness - swelling under knees - he overcame his pain and still trained..." When Zhenya was 10 years old, he had a first sponsor and the whole family went to Germany. In a small city near Munich Zhenya started going to an ordinary school and soon started speaking German. Now Evgeny has a certificate of a secondary education. Zhenya also wants to get a higher education but now he has to choose only one thing to concetrate on and it is tennis.

Evgeny's father whose name is also Evgeny is Zhenya's coach. He is also the former professional hockey player. Evgeny's mather Irina is a housewife, she lives in Germany. An elder brother Alexey combines his main work with helping Zhenya.

Zhenya loves hockey, he follows NHL and is good friends with Sergey Fedorov.

Zhenya likes listening to hard rock and metal.

In the childhood Evgeny's idol was Pete Sampras. Now he likes Marat Safin and believes that Marat can return to the first spot in the rankings when fully fit.

Zhenya's favorite shot is forehand, and favorite surface is hard.
